Cocoa coast
I have to admit that our recent trip planning leaves a bit to be desired. The northern half of Brazil always seemed so far away that I thought I’d have time to figure it out later. Well, now it’s later.
So today’s destination was just ‘farther north’. Again, we had to drive inland all the way back to the BR-101 in order to move just a little bit farther north, then cut back to the coast again. We would move much faster if we weren’t keen on sticking to the coast, but I prefer the lombadas and slow going near the beach, compared to the trucks and smooth pavement on the 101.
We lucked out and found a sweet spot just south of Povoado Cana Brava right before sundown. Finding a spot on the beach – not 100 meters back – is important now. The ocean breeze cools things down and keeps the mosquitoes (and dengue) away. Still, it’s damn hot and humid weather for camping. We better get used to it.
We were all alone except for the ducks and chickens.
I’m originally from this region. If you are planning to go to Ilhéus, a good option is eat a Kibi in Nacibe’s Restaurant,and have an ice cream on Danubio Azul Sorveteria.
The trip from Ilhéus to Itacaré is awesome, and you can have a shower on a waterfall.
We would like to swap with you any day. When we arrived in Germany (to get our vehicle ready) they had a late spell of winter, which refuses to go away. Minus 10 degrees (centigrade), icy cold winds, and over a foot of snow = no working conditions for people used to the sub tropics.

If you would ike to rest a little from driving so long at Bahia coast, stop by Ilheus. I’d say you shouldn’t leave without a litlle regular boat trip to Morro de São Paulo, in a day or two stop, from small city Valença, heading to Tinharé Island. You need ro park VW Kombi at a regular parking place near downtown where boat leaves. Observe several wooden boats and canoes hand made manufacturers along river shoresmsince XVII century. Enjoy food, people and photos!

You can shortcut trip passing trhough Itaparica Island and go ferry to Salvador, biggest historical city, golden church, popular music birthplace, carnival crowded parades place. Just little care on wallets and goods, camera and money when in tourist places – people are far lovely and very friendly, specially in Bahia and northern, very open and candid. Congratulatin for your adventure initiative and courage. I’d lie to ave it too.
