Out Through Chicken
After a week of rain, the McCarthy road was a mess. The potholes seemed to have doubled in depth. We slowly bounced our way back to pavement with only a few stops along the way.
Out on the main highway, it was an easy drive all the way up to Chicken, Alaska. There isn’t much to it, but they use what they’ve got: a silly name (supposedly because nobody could spell Ptarmigin) and a giant dredge. Works for us.
The Top of the World Highway gets a little dirtier and rougher out of Chicken, but still a decent road by Alaska standards. From here, we wound our way all the way up to what must be one of the lonliest border checkpoints in the U.S.
When Caroline & I ventured up to Alaska in ’78 in our VW van, we stopped in Chicken & met Anne Hobbs Purdy. She had written a book called Tisha about her days as a young school teacher there in the 20s. Really made Chicken special to us. The book was very enjoyable.
Looking forward to reading that book!
