Rockets and Visitors

We headed east to Port Canaveral to watch the SpaceX rocket launch. It had been postponed a few times, but we’re flexible. The campground at Jetty Park was really nice, with shuffle board and lots of bike riding space.

VW buses always attract other buses. Not too long after we arrived, Marci and her bus Shaggy found us. She offered us some great suggestions for the area and left us with some of her awesome blown glass figurines.

The rocket launch was scheduled for 1:23 a.m. so we set the alarms and crashed for a few hours before. We walked out to the end of the fishing pier at 1 a.m. on a random Tuesday and sat down for the show. There were others there, but not nearly as many as I would have imagined. We saw the light across the bay before feeling the ground rumble and the heat. It was so cool to see the glowing fireball lifting up across the sky. By the time we had watched it become small, and walked back along the pier, we were able to see the live feed of the rocket successfully landing on a barge 10 miles into the sea. They weren’t expecting the booster to land as the height and angle of its re-entry were more severe than ever before. A very exciting night!

We headed back to Orlando, for more theme park fun. Within an hour of getting there, we got a message that some other vanlifers were in the area. James and Rachel from Idle Theory Bus stopped by for a visit and shared our campsite for the night. Good times with good folks!
