Interested to know how Bode, with his amazing range of experiences, interacts with his peers in the US. I had similar experience as a kid and it wasn’t always easy – I don’t regret a thing though!

George – This is something we should write about more, but the stories aren’t always at our fingertips. In short, he’s doing amazing and is quick to make new friends everywhere. His personality is developing independently and he’s gregarious. It’s fun to see. He’s just got some kind of spark that maybe we just don’t quite understand yet – sometimes its difficult, but usually he’s immediately liked/popular everywhere he goes. He does seem prefer making friends in English, though – a command of the language helps. He sees his cousins about as much as I saw mine (mostly) so that’s not an issue either.

Here’s a funny story from right after we returned: Bode went to a YMCA day camp near Houston. After his first day, we asked him if he met any new friends. Of course, the answer was “yes,” but he didn’t elaborate so we asked more. Eventually he told us he couldn’t remember each of them because… they all looked the same. So, you can imagine the immediate racial references in our minds from eras gone by. But, Bode’s problem – all the kids were white!

That’s funny! You’ve done a great job with that young man.
