Custom Bed
Some folks had asked about the custom sleeping platform up top, so here are some photos. I also posted a full how-to over at TheSamba. Enjoy.

Hey Jason,
Great website! Seems as if your trip is going somewhat along as expected, eh? I am enjoying the threads, photos, and stories of your epic VW trip. Besides that it is giving me continued hope to make our trip from NM to CR.
Had a question for you on your brilliant pop top bed. I have read the thread on the Samba, which I will bookmark. I wanted to know if you just bent the plywood to form to the roof, instead of putting cross members on the roof itself for ease of install or because the roof is strong enough to support the weight?
Curious if you and Angela can sleep up there? Also, is your paint getting scratched up by the plywood?
I have been considering ideas for a roof top bed, and yours seems like a good one, but I may vary it a bit. I want to be able to sleep 2 adults, as we will be traveling with dogs, and you know they can take over a bed. If we are to camp at a location where the side tent can’t go up, I want up and the dogs can stay below.
Look forward to your response if you get the time.
Regards and good travels!
Brian
Thanks for this Jason. My wife and I are planning a similar adventure in our 68 🙂
For what it’s worth, we’ve been using a self-inflating sleeping pad on top of this and it makes a huge difference.
