12/70

Red Beard surprised me today. My birth date is stamped into front of the car. Right in the middle of the nose. It was just hidden by some paint.

The official records indicate our car was produced in February of 1971. However, this seems to indicate it was born a bit earlier than that. Make sense, of course. The bus wasn’t built in a day. So, from now on I’ll just assume that the bus and I were born simultaneously.

Your birth date is 12/70? Your mother should be congratulated for having survived what is surely a record-setting feat; a month-long birth. Wow! 😉

What does “Production Date” on the M-Code anyway? My guess is that it’s the date all the parts came together and the bus rolled on its way. (Though since Red Beard is a Westy it surely took a day or two more to ship him down the A 2 from Hanover to Rheda-Wiedenbrück where Westfalia outfitted him as a camper.)

Contrary to your statement, the bus surely *was* built in a day, along with about 1,200 others (if my math and guesses about the German work week are right); I suspect that stamp is some kind of batch date for that panel.

In short, I’d bet it’s more that you share a birth month with that particular panel, and not a birth date with the bus as a whole.

    Alright,
    Mitch.

Dude – If I find my birth month/year physically stamped into my bus, I’m claiming it.
